symptom
Error occurred connecting to the Exchange 5.5 Server.

cause
This sometimes indicates that the Exchange server is using an LDAP port that conflicts with Active Directory default port.

The Exchange 5.5 Server is installed on an Active Directory domain controller and is configured to use LDAP port 389. Port 389 is the port that is used for Active Directory and therefore cannot be used for Exchange when it is installed on a domain controller.

fix
To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

1. Verify that the Exchange 5.5 Administrator tool is installed on the Exchange Migrator console.
2. Configure the Exchange 5.5 server to use a port other than 389.

NetIQ has also seen this issue as a result of network resolution. Verify the forward and reverse lookup records in DNS for the Exchange server.
