symptom
An error message is received in the event log from a detect rule setup to monitor a file.

symptom
Error: 'Source: VigilEnt Detect cannot audit file <directory>. The filename or extension is too long'.

cause
System Drives must be NT File System (NTFS) formatted to support auditing.  Auditing cannot be implemented on File Allocation Table (FAT32) formatted drives.

fix

The drive being monitored must be converted to NT File System (NTFS) format in order to enable auditing.  Please see the link below to learn more about how to convert your File Allocation Table (FAT32) drive to an NTFS drive.

note
Permissions and auditing for files and folders can only be set on NT File System (NTFS) formatted drives.
