symptom
When signing on to the AS/400 or iSeries, an error message displays.

symptom
Error: 'Previous sign-on . . .:   MM/DD/YY  HH:MM:SS.'

cause
The "Sign-on Information" screen is generated by system value QDSPSGNINF, which controls the display of sign-on information.  The previous sign-on date and time are important from a security perspective because this information should roughly match the user's recollection of the last time he or she signed on to the system.  If it does not, then this may indicate user profile tampering.

There are two possible values for this system value:

  • 0=Do Not Display
  • 1=Display

There is a also a user profile parameter called, DSPSGNINF, which also controls the display of sign-on information. There are three values for this parameter: *YES, *NO, and *SYSVAL.  If *YES is chosen, the Sign-on Information screen will display for that user profile, regardless of the system value setting.  If *NO is chosen, the Sign-on Information screen will not be displayed.  If *SYSVAL is chosen, whatever value is stated in the system value will be used to determine whether or not to display previous sign-on information.
