symptom
Error appears in the event log when trying to send an e-mail alert in NT Detect.

symptom
Error: 'Cannot email: Sending failed; nested exception is: javax.mail.MessagingException: 501 <SYSTEM@MACHINE.DOMAIN.COM>... Sender domain.' must exist"?

cause
The SMTP relay host receiving e-mail directly from the agent is refusing to accept e-mail because the agent does not have a resolvable domain name.

fix

This is a requirement determined by the configuration of the SMTP mail relay, and thus the workaround is to either meet this requirement on the agent side or relax the requirement in the SMTP mail server configuration. Here are two possible resolutions:

  1. Rename the machine hosting the agent using a fully qualified domain name (ex. machine.netiq.com).

  2. Configure the SMTP relay host so that it does not require the sender to have a fully qualified name.  Consult your local network administrator for this configuration change.
