Error: 'This is not a Windows NT machine MISSING' is returned when the Windows NT service patch level check is run against a Windows 2000 machine. 

symptom
Error: 'Java.lang.Exception: Wrong OS MISSING' is returned when the Windows 2000 service patch level check is run against a Windows NT machine.

cause

You will get an error when you run a Windows 2000 check against an NT machine or an NT check against a Windows 2000 machine.



fix

This can be corrected by either editing the security checkup template in VSM or by creating  two new OS specific templates.

TO CREATE A SECURITY CHECKUP TEMPLATE

  1. Right-click Security Checkups and select VSM Actions | New.
    1. Template Name ? Enter a name for the security checkup template.
    2. Description? Enter a description for the security checkup template.
  2. For each operating system, select the checks that you want to include in this security checkup template and enter the following information for each check (if applicable):
    1. Penalty? Enter the amount of score you want to assign this check if the actual value does not match the expected value. All penalty points in each category will be added up for a category score, and all penalty points for each endpoint will be added up for the total server score.
    2. Expected Value? Enter the value that you expect for the check. If the actual value differs from this value, the designated penalty score will be assigned to the check.
    3. Exclusion List? Each time VSM performs a security check, it may report some variations from the expected value that you would like to ignore. You can exclude these variations from being checked by assigning them to an exclusion list for that particular security check.
      1. To view detailed information about each check, click Show Details.
      2. Click Hide Details for the check list to reappear.
      3. To make notes about why exclusions w.
        ere made for the security check, click Show.
    4. Comments - Anyone viewing the security checkup template will be able to see these notes. Click Hide Comments for the check list to reappear.
  3. Define the severity ranges for the security checkup template:
    1. Click the SeverityRanges tab.
      1. Range Label? Enter a name for the severity range.
      2. Lowest Score ? Enter the lowest score in the severity range.
  4. Click Apply to save the new security checkup template, or click OK to save the new template and close the dialog box.

TO EDIT A SECURITY CHECKUP TEMPLATE

 

  1. Right-click the template that you want to edit and select VSM Actions | Edit. The Edit Security Checkup Template dialog box is opened and the name of the security checkup template is displayed in the Template Name field.
    1. Description ? Enter a description for the security checkup template.
  2. For each operating system, select the checks that you want to include in this security checkup template and enter each check?s parameters, and if applicable, an exclusion list.
    1. To view detailed information about each check, click Show Details. Click Hide Details for the check list to reappear. You can use the << and >> buttons to scroll through the checks while the details are showing.
    2. To make notes about why exclusions were made for the security check, click Show.
    3. Comments. Anyone viewing the security checkup template will be able to see these notes. Click Hide Comments for the check list to reappear. 
  3. Define the severity ranges for the security checkup template:
