symptom

When the Multi-Master synchronization runs, the following events are written to the Application log on the Directory and Resource Administrator server(there is one per replicated data type):

Description:
The registry sub-tree for ServerConfiguration could not be saved to a data file for replication.

The synchronization then finishes with this event:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MCSAdminSvc
Event Category: MultiMaster
Event ID: 13401
User: N/A
Computer: computer_name
Description:
The replication thread has finished Full replication to secondary_DRA_servername.  It failed to replicate to secondary_DRA_servername, see the replication status for more details. 



cause

The above error message is caused because the primary Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) server is not able to generate the registry files for the various registry hives (security, policy,etc.).   The error returned by the Operating System, when attempting to generate the registry files, is 0x80070522 (required privilege is not held by the client).   



fix

In order to successfully generate a registry file the service account running the MCS OnePoint Administrator Server service requires the ability to Backup & Restore.  The service account running the MCS OnePoint Administrator Serverservices must be granted the Backup files and directories right in the Local Security Policy snap-in under Local Policies | User Rights Assignments on all DRA servers.  After granting the service account this privilege the MCS OnePoint Administrator Server service must be restarted.
