symptom
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name.
cause
There are several possible causes for this error message. Please refer to the following Microsoft articles addressing this error message:
- Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 261007 : Event ID 1000 Is Logged in the Application Event Log
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 329708 : Windows Cannot Determine the User or Computer Name
Please keep in mind that the Return code at the end of the line sometimes tells more than the error message.
- Return Code 1722 = RPC server is unavailable
- Return Code 1317 = The specified user does not exist
**NOTE** For more information on the meaning of Windows return codes (RC=) go to a command prompt and type NET HELPMSG xxxx (where xxxx is the number in the return code)
fix
For the Return Code 1317, make sure the account logging into the workstation has permissions to the container that this object and computer are in. ( i.e. Make sure the Authenticated Users still has the 'Read' )right.
