symptom
The path specified in a command line argument is invalid /x86/Setup/Setup.iss when installing MSDE

cause
A path that is too long or contains spaces is specified for the TEMP variables.

fix
This error can be seen during the MSDE install. It is potentially due to the size or characters in the path to the users temp directory as defined in the Environment variables. After changing the environment variables for TEMP and TMP from \Documents and Settings\User\Local settings..... to be C:\Temp, the install should be successful.
