symptom
Modeling: Import data is taking a very long time when importing computers.

cause
Computer account properties are not all stored in the Domain SAM nor Active Directory. The Computer must be contacted to obtain some of the account information in order to populate the modeling information.

fix

Only add valid machines into the project.  It is not a recommended practice to add all the computer accounts displayed in object picker for the domain.  Consider running the 'Expired Computers' report and removing from the project computer accounts are expired.

As an alternative, add the computers after running the Import Modeling Data step. If you are importing computers in order to use modeling to rename them, keep in mind you can only migrate and rename the computer at the same time, if the computer is a Windows NT 4.0 machine. If that is the case, only add the NT 4.0 machines before importing the modeling data.

  1. Select Objects (Only select users and groups (and possibly NT 4.0 machines that need to be renamed)).
  2. Specify Migration Settings.
  3. Import Modeling data.
  4. Select Objects.
    • Add the additional computer accounts.
  5. Specify Migration Settings to complete the options for the computer migration.
    • These same options can be accessed during the Migrate Computers wizard.
