ERROR: [7297]E21303: CopyProperties failed for CN=computername$. hr=0x80072032, An invalid dn syntax has been specified.

symptom
The computer account is created in the target domain, but the account is disabled and Active Directory Users and Computers displays the computer name with a $ suffix.

cause

In reviewing the MigratedObjects table in the protar database after migrating computers, the SourceAdsPath for computers that do not migrate correctly is LDAP://domain.com/COMPUTERNAME, while the SourceAdsPath for a computers that do migrate correctly is LDAP://DOMAIN.COM/CN=COMPUTERNAME,CN=Computers,DC=domain,DC=com.

This issue is caused in Domain Migration Administrator (DMA) 7.1 when the check box for 'List only computers that are Windows NT/2000 servers' is selected on the Domain Migration Administrator Settings dialog window and the source domain is Windows 2000.

An alternative resolution for DMA 7.1 is to ensure that the box for  'List only computers that are Windows NT/2000 servers' is not selected on the Domain Migration Administrator Settings dialog window.  The Domain Migration Administrator Settings dialog window can be reached in the following ways:

1. In the left pane of the DMA MMC, select and right-click Domain Migration Administrator.
2. Select View | DMA Settings.

3. In the Select Objects wizard, or in the Migrate Computers wizard, click Options.
