Resolution

fact
Directory and Resource Administrator 6.50

symptom
The MCS OnePoint Administration Server service causes high CPU utilization for extended periods of time when processing a CLI command.

symptom
The CPU utilization on the DRA server frequently reaches 100%  for up to 10 minutes at a time.

cause

This issue is caused by using the following command line:

  • EA /DOMAIN:domain_name USER * DISPLAY

The /DOMAIN:domain_name option causes this CLI search to use the netbiosnameofdomain filter.  Even though it filters out non-managed accounts, the netbiosnameofdomain is a special filter and thus DRA does string matching on all managed user objects in the domain.  With a large domain, this can cause extended periods of high CPU utilization.

fix
Using the same command line without the /DOMAIN:domain_name option will avoid the string matching and thus improve performance.  Another option, is to use the Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) Reporting Tool to display and sort the same information.

note
DRA version 6.6 changed the way the CLI processes the /DOMAIN switch.  DRA 6.6 optimizes this search by the accounts provider instead of a string compare and provides a significant performance improvement.  Consider upgrading to DRA version 6.6 to resolve this issue.
