symptom
The description field of the source computer is not migrated to the description field in the properties of the AD computer account, when migrating a machine.

cause

The ability to migrate the Description field for a computer account depends on the operating system of the source domain.

  • In a Windows NT domain, the Description of a computer is not a property of the computer account.  Rather, it is stored in the registry of that computer.  When DMA migrates a computer from an NT 4 domain (regardless of the operating system of the computer being migrated), DMA does not populate the description field in the target domain.  This is by design because this property is not available in the SAM database of an NT 4 domain.
  • Active Directory does store the computer description as an attribute of the computer account.  If the source domain is Active Directory, then DMA is able to migrate the computer property to the target account in AD, whether the computer being migrated is running any NT 4 or later operating system.

fix

This is by design. However, if you require a way to migrate the computer description with an NT source domain, you could potentially develop a solution using a script or with the DMA data modeling tool.
