Resolution

goal
Can I control what type of group Exchange Migrator creates in Active Directory when migrating Exchange 5.5 Distribution Lists?

fact
Exchange Migrator 1.x

fact
Exchange Migrator 2.x

fix

Although it is possible to change the group type using a Distribution List-PostProcess script, keep in mind that Universal Distribution Groups cannot be added to access control lists (ACLs) and may result in a loss of permissions.

In order to maintain permissions associated with your source distribution lists, Exchange Migrator creates security groups for all distribution lists migrated to Exchange 2000.  You should understand how groups function in an Exchange 2000 organization for both native and mixed environments before you migrate your distribution lists.  When you migrate distribution lists to Exchange 2000 in a Windows native mode environment, Exchange Migrator creates the lists on the target organization as universal security groups.  When you migrate distribution lists to Exchange 2000 in a mixed mode environment, Exchange Migrator creates the lists on the target as global security groups.
