symptom
Errors during user migration caused accounts to disappear and orphan the users Exchange 2000 mailbox.

cause
The cause for this could be due to an LSASS crash in the middle of the migration. As a result, the OS is unable to write the accounts anywhere after removing them from the source. As a result, orphaned E2K mailboxes exist.

fix

To remedy the mailbox issue:

  1. Create a new placeholder account.
  2. Open Exchange System Manager.
  3. Right-click and select Reconnect.
  4. Browse to the placeholder account.
