symptom
Error 'Access denied' when trying to manage services on a remote machine.

cause

The above issue can be caused by any of the the following:

  • WINS resolution issue.
  • Third party security product like ISS.
  • A connection is left open from the DRA server to the remote machine.
  • A file handle (connection)  is left open from the DRA server to the remote machine.
  • The Server service has been disabled on the target machine.

fix

The issue can be resolved by performing one of the following:

  • Check WINS and correct the entry for the remote machine in the WINS database.
    • To troublesoot, run the following command from the DRA server:  Net View remotemachine.  If a 'network path cannot be found' error is returned, it is a resolution issue.
  • Configure the security policy of ISS or some other third party security product to allow the DRA server service account to connect to shares on the remote machine.
    • To troublesoot, run the following command from the DRA server:  Net View remotemachine.  If an 'Access Denied' error is returned, check to see if a third party security product is installed.
  • Close any open 'Session', from the DRA server to the remote machine, by opening the Computer Management snap in and selecting Shared Folders | Sessions
  • Restart the Printer Spooler service.  DRA uses this service to enumerate printers and services.  Restarting the spooler service should close all connections.
  • Restart the remote machine.  Occassionally, the operating system can leave an open handle ,from the DRA server to the remote machine, even though no connection is displayed when viewing 'Sessions' in the
Computer Management snapin.  The only means to release the open handle is to reboot the remote machine.
  • Enable the Server Service on the target machine.
