fix

Below are the recommended Internet Explorer (IE) configuration settings for the Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) MMC. These settings will ensure that the MMC will run optimally in any given environment. In order for an Assistant Admin to optimize the MMC, IE settings must be configured under the security context of the Assistant Admin.

Most environments are set up differently, with regards to Intranet and Internet accessibility. This section will address the various Local Area Network (LAN) settings in IE. Within IE, these settings are located under Tools | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings.

  • The Automatically detect settings flag is used to automatically detect proxy server settings or configuration settings. If an administrator is using a script containing the configuration settings,  the Use automatic configuration script flag will be checked. These settings should have no affect on connecting to the MMC.
  • If Use a proxy server is checked, click Advanced and type in the machine name of the IIS server for DRA, under the Exceptions section.

NOTE:  If there are a large number of machines listed under Exceptions and the IIS server is listed last, it is possible that the IIS server might not be picked up as an exception. In other words, there could be a limitation in the number of characters in the Exceptions field. If this is the case, move the IIS server name toward the top of the list.
      • A second option, when the Use a proxy server flag is checked, is to enable the Bypass proxy server for local addresses. This setting will disable the use of the proxy server for all local (Intranet) addresses. This also may speed up the access to these Intranet addresses. Finally, when using a proxy server, port 80 is the recommended port to use.

In addition to the above recommended LAN settings, the following settings under the General tab of Tools | Internet Options are recommended for performance:

    • Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings. The recommended setting for Check for newer versions of stored pages: is Automatically. With this setting, the first time a property page is loaded in the MMC, it may take some time while the files are initially cached. Thereafter, the files will be accessed from cache until either (1) a newer version of the file is installed on the server, or (2) the cached files get deleted.
