symptom
All of the clients are connecting, by default, to the secondary Directory and Resource Administrator server.

cause
In a Windows 2000 AD domain, the agents hold information about the site each Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) server is located in.  If there is one DRA server per site, the clients will be directed to the local DRA server in the same site as the client machine.  However, if there are two DRA servers within the same site, or if managing a Windows NT domain, the agent will direct the clients to the DRA server that is listed first, alphabetically in the server list contained by the agent.  DRA does not attempt to load balance when determining the DRA server that a client connects to.  At this time, no load balancing is performed by the agent.

fix

A workaround is to manually connect to the DRA servers that are not listed first alphabetically.  Perform the following steps depending on the client type:

Web Console client:

  1. Click the [Change] link located in the top right menu bar.
  2. Change the radio button in the "Connect Options" section to Connect to a specific Administration server.
  3. Enter the name of the DRA server in the Specified Administration Server field.  The fformat should be \\servername .
  4. Press Enter.

Directory and Resource Administrator 7.x:  (Account and Resource Management or the Delegation and Configuration)

  1. Launch either the Account and Resource Management or the Delegation and Configuration Console.
  2. From the File menu select the Connect to DRA server? option.
  3. Select the Connect to this DRA server option
  4. In this field specify the name of the DRA server you want to connect to. The format should be <\\servername>.
  5. Click OK.

MMC Client:

  1. Right-click the Directory and Resource Administrator node at the top of the tree
  2. Select Specify DRA server?
  3. Select the Connect to the following Directory and Resource Administrator server for this managed domain or computer checkbox
  4. Specify the name of the DRA server you want to connect to.  The fformat should be \\servername

An Enhancement Request has been opened with Development to include this functionality in a future version of Directory and Resource Administrator.
