symptom
When migrating a computer running Windows NT 4, the computer account is created in the target domain successfully, but when the agent is being dispatched to the target machine, this message is received in the DMA Agent Monitor window in the console. This message can also be received when attempting to report on a computer.Â
cause
When migrating a computer, translating security on a computer, or reporting on a computer, DMA will install attempt to install an agent on the computer. This can fail for multiple reasons:
- Name resolution is not working between the DMA console and the remote machine.
- The remote machine does not have enough disk space to accomodate the DMA agent process.
- This error can also be caused by mis-matched networking files within Windows NT on the computer where you are trying to install the agent. This may have been caused by installing network protocol files of an earlier version on this computer where a later service pack had previously been installed.Â
fix
To resolve this issue:
- From the DMA console, make sure you can connect to the computer where you are attempting to install the agent using a command like \\computername\c$. If this error message is received with native tools outside of DMA, that means this is an issue that is not being caused by DMA but by Windows name resolution. Please refer to Microsoft TechNet to resolve network connectivity issues.
- Make sure the computer where you are attempting to install the agent has sufficient disk space, adequate page file space, and adequate registry size limits. Increase the size of each in even increments until this error is not longer recieved.
- Install the latest Windows NT service pack on the remote computer.Â
note
If none of the above resolutions apply, please refer to Microsoft article 225782 for more troubleshooting steps.
