Resolution

fact
Directory and Resource Administrator 6.40

symptom
Cannot create a group in the Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) MMC interface with a forward slash or backward slash in the Windows 2000 group name field.

symptom

The Active Directory Users & Computers MMC interface allows groups to be created with a forward slash ( / ) or backward slash ( \ ) in the Windows 2000 group name but the DRA MMC interface does not accept forward or backward slashes and displays the following error message:

The group name you entered contains one or more of the reserved characters:
Do not use any of the following characters in the group name:
* \ / { } : ; | = , + * ? < >

A forward slash ( / ) or a backward slash ( \ )  is a valid character only in the Windows 2000 group name field and not in the Pre-Windows 2000 group name field.

cause
The above error is due to DRA not recognizing a forward slash or a backward slash as a valid character in the Windows 2000 group name field.

fix

This issue is corrected in Directory and Resource Administrator 6.50.  To download the latest version of DRA:

Download: Directory and Resource Administrator (requires a password)

As a workaround for Directory and Resource Administrator version 6.40 and earlier is to create the group without the slashes.  After the group has been created modify the Windows 2000 group name field to include the slash.
