Domain Migration Administrator (DMA) contacts the remote computer using a series of Microsoft API calls.  Since these are Microsoft API calls, the methods that they use to contact the remote system are controlled within the operating system.  One of the calls, 'NetShareGetInfo', uses DNS or NetBIOS to retrieve information about a particular shared resource on a server.
