Resolution

fact
Domain Migration Administrator 7.1

symptom
'The name you gave computer nameis invalid. Please input a name that does not start with a number.' is received when using the Rename Workstations wizard to rename machines to begin with a number.

cause

This restriction was coded into Domain Migration Administrator to prevent computers from being renamed with a name that consists of all numbers which is against Microsoft best practices.  Renaming computers with all numbers may cause conflicts when using TCP/IP based networks and utilites.  Read Microsoft Technet Article Q24412 for more information regarding this issue.

fix

This issue has been resolved with the release of Domain Migration Administrator version 7.1.  In DMA 7.1, you are able to rename a computer with a NetBIOS name that begins with a series of numbers.  However, there is a requirement that the name contains at least one non-numeric character.
