symptom
A computer's description in My Network Places does not match the computer account's Description field in Active Directory after changing it in Directory and Resouorce Administrator.

symptom
An Assistant Admin makes a change to the Description field of a computer account using the Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) MMC interface.  After the operation is completed, the description is the same in both Active Directory and My Network Places.  When checked again at a later time, the description in My Network Places has reverted back to the way it was before it was changed by the Assistant Admin.

cause

A computer's description as displayed in My Network Places is reported by the Browser service.  The Browser service obtains the information from the individual computer itself, which reports that and other information to the Browser service based on its own registry values.

When viewing computer information in the DRA MMC interface, the displayed information is obtained from Active Directory.  DRA writes changes made in the Description field to both Active Directory and the Browser.  If the computer was turned off and not available when DRA wrote the changes, the computer's registry will not be updated with the new information.  When the computer becomes available and announces itself to the Browser, the old description information is passed.  When that computer is viewed in My Network Places, the description displayed no longer matches the one in Active Directory.

fix
To resolve this issue, make sure the target computer is online and available before modifying the computer description.
