Resolution

goal
How can I create a project template that will allow other DMA projects to have the same default settings?

fix
This unsupported workaround will allow you to create a project with default settings that can work as a template so that other projects will have the same settings. Please note that this is not a design feature for Domain Migration Administrator and there are some limitations. The steps listed will show how to create a project with default settings. You can export the project to another Administrator who can select the objects to be migrated and use the default settings already stored in the project.

Steps to create a project with default settings for export.

  1. Create a Project designating the Source and Target domain.
  2. Using the Select Objects wizard, select one User, one Group and one Computer account. This will allow the Specify Migration Settings wizard to appear and include settings specific to each object.
  3. Using the Specify Migration Settings wizard, enable or disable all of the desired settings.
  4. In the left pane of the MMC, right click the current project and select Export Project and send the project to another Administrator who can run the remainder of the migration.

Steps for the Administrator receiving the exported project.

  1. Select the wizard Create Migration Project.
  2. In the wizard, select the option to 'Import' a project, then give the project a name and finish.
  3. Once imported, the Administrator can remove the one User, Group and Computer selected earlier and add any objects planned for the migration.
  4. In order for DMA to use the default settings, the option 'Use migration settings defined in the Migration Settings Wizard?' must be enabled in the Data Source window in the User, Group or Computer Migration wizards.

There is a limitation in that once a project is created, with the Source and Target Domain entered, it cannot be changed. A new project with a different Source and Target Domain must be created with the defaults settings reapplied.

note
Please note that the information regarding exporting and delegatin of projects can also be obtained from Chapter 2 and Chapter 6 of the product User Guide.
