Resolution

fact
Directory and Resource Administrator 6.x

fact
Directory and Resource Administrator 7.x

symptom
MCS OnePoint Administration/NetIQ Administration service terminated unexpectedly after importing a Domains.Dns registry key from another Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) server.

cause

When installing and initializing the Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) server component for the first time, automatic discovery and configuration processes take place in which the DRA server collects a list of names of all managed domains and the domain controllers in these domains, as well as the names of domain controllers of all domains trusted by those being managed.  One of the places this information is written is the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mission Critical Software\OnePoint\Administration\Modules\Accounts\Domains.Dns

Importing this key from another, previously installed DRA server may make reference to information the new DRA server has not gathered yet.  The MCS OnePoint Administration service (DRA 6.x versions)/NetIQ Administration service (DRA 7.x versions) would not be able to interpret the information it has and would then stop unexpectedly.

fix
When installing a DRA server for the first time, it is very important to allow it to proceed automatically so that it can build the administration environment correctly.  Once the server has completely initialized for the first time and is accessible for use, configuration changes can be safely made using the MMC interface (DRA 6.x versions) or the Delegation and Configuration Console (DRA 7.x versions).
