How does the Manual Agent Installation work?

How do I install a Manual Agent?

The manual agent setup program installs an agent on the local computer and guides you through agent configuration. You will need to identify computers that you plan to manually install an Unmanaged Agent on.

Unmanaged (Manual Agents) will need to be authorized by the Central Computer, before they can send data into the CC. This can be done before or after the Manual Agent installer is run on the agent(s). To do this in advance, start with Step 1 below, if not skip to Install Files on Agent section:

  1. Start the Control Center Console
  2. Click Launch Agent Administrator
  3. Select ?Unmanaged Agents? and click Next
  4. Select Authorize Unmanaged Agents
  5. Use the Add button to Browse for or Type a Single Agent?s Name
  6. Use the Import button to import a list of Unmanaged Agents
  7. Click OK to save the changes

*** Install Files on the Agent ***

  1. Log on with an administrator account to the agent computer
  2. Close all open applications
  3. Run the ManualAgent.MSI setup program from the \Additional Setups folder in the installation kit
  4. Read the Welcome screen and click Next
  5. If the setup program displays the License Agreement window, read the license agreement, review the license agreement. If you accept the agreement, click Yes
  6. Fill in the information for the Primary CC and Configuration group, along with the Communications port used with your current Configuration Group
  7. Click Next to continue
  8. Verify the installation path for the install files
  9. Click install to complete the Manual Agent Installation

When the Central Comptuer can't directly contact an agent (Due to different doman / firewall / or other reasons), or if there is a slow link between the agent and the CC; it becomes necessary to install an Unmanaged Agent.

Additional Information

Formerly known as NETIQKB2184

After manually installing an agent that cannot be accessed by the Agent Manager, you need to force the new agent computer into the appropriate computer groups. Since you may never scan this new agent computer, especially if it is outside the internal network firewall, forcing the computer into computer groups ensures you continue to collect information from this agent computer.

For additional information about including or excluding a computer from a computer group, please refer to the following knowledge base article:
