Error:'The Microsoft Exchange Directory server name is illegal' When Cloning A User Account With An Exchange 5.5 Mailbox

symptom
When cloning a user account with an Exchange 5.5 mailbox, the following error is logged in the Application log on the Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) server:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MCSAdminSvc Event Category: ExSupportLib Event ID: 14597 Description:
    E21806: An error occurred while cloning mailbox [DAPIStart] The Microsoft Exchange Directory server name directory_name Private is illegal. (c00000b7)

The following error message is displayed in the Web Console

    Error saving the changes to the Mailbox.
    Directory and Resource Administrator cannot complete the requested Exchange operation due to an internal DAPI error.

cause
The above error messages occur when attempting to clone or modify an Exchange 5.5 mailbox on an Exchange Server whose display name includes more than 31 characters.

fix
Hotfix Q12303 for DRA 6.40 resolves this issue. To install this hotfix:

  1. Ensure Directory and Resource Administrator 6.40 is installed on the Administration server computer.
  2. Run the DRA64000_HotfixQ12303.exe file on the Administration server computer.

This hotfix modifies the McsExchLib.DLL file which is normally located in the Program Files\NetIQ\DRA folder on the Administration server computer. Click on the following link to download Hotfix Q12303:
