Error: 'Failed to create share ShareName with path E:\\Folder1\Folder2 on machine \\TargetMachineName The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect'

symptom
When attempting to migrate data to a non-shared folder you may receive the error: 'Failed to create share ShareName with path E:\\Folder1\Folder2 on machine \\TargetMachineName The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect'

cause
This is caused by an issue in Server Consolidator that incorrectly adds an extra backslash (\) between the drive letter and the target folder path.

fix

This issue is resolved with Hotfix Q12399 for DMA/SC 7.0 This Hotfix may be downloaded from our website.

The only known workaround is to share the target folder prior to migration.
