What are the required services that must be running for Domain Migration Administrator to dispatch agents and function normally under all circumstances?

fix

For search purposes, here is a list of the required services that must be running for DMA to dispatch agents and function normally under all circumstances:

NT 4.0 Computers

Required Components:

  • NetBIOS Interface
  • RPC Configuration
  • Server
  • Workstation [in order to write back results]

Required services:

  • RPC call locator
  • TCP NetBIOS helper
  • Server
  • Workstation [in order to write back results]

Win2000 Computers

Required Components:

  • Client for MS Networks [must be installed and enabled]
  • File and Printer Share [must be installed and enabled]

Required services:

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Remote Registry Service
  • TCP NetBIOS Helper Service

This next list below contains items (COM+ Event service, DNS Client service, NT LM Security Support Provider service) that are not directly related to the agent dispatch process, but possibly could be needed to support it depending upon other machine configuration parameters.

  • COM+ Event service
  • DNS Client service
  • Netlogon service
  • NT LM Security Support Provider service
  • RPC service
  • Workstation service [in order to write back results]

For example, if the DMA console machine and the agent machine are both configured to use WINS, then the DNS client service is unnecessary for Win2000 non-domain controllers. Same with the NT LM Security Support Provider service -- if the DMA console machine and the agent machine are not using LM password authentication, then this service isn't necessary.
