Environment

GroupWise 18

Situation

When a few GroupWise windows client users send or reply to an e-mail, it randomly causes an memory error to pop up on the screen that says :  "GroupWise Error [8101], memory error.  Memory function failure".  This error also shows in the verbose Post Office Agent log.  Other than the annoyance of seeing the error pop up or seeing the error in the POA log, the users do not complain about any concerning symptoms.

Resolution

After GroupWise development examined the customer submitted files, it was determined that the cause was not having any user address books selected in the GroupWise Windows client Address book, File, "Name Completion Address Books".  If you have no books selected, this error can occur.  Workaround is to select at least 1 of the user address books.

Cause

A bug in the GroupWise Windows client code, where it is depending on finding a selected user Address book and not finding it.  A fix has been made , but only in the GroupWise 18.3.1 code that will be fully tested and shipping later in the first half of 2021.

Additional Information

It is also possible this error can also occur if there is a corrupted user GroupWise signature.  So you could, in the GroupWise Windows client, go to, Tools, Options, Environment, Signature tab, copy all signature(s) data to a safe place if needed, then Delete all signatures.  Click Apply, then OK and Close.  Exit GroupWise then re-login and now try to duplicate the 8101 memory error, either as a pop error, or listed in a verbose POA log.

It may be a good idea, depending on the complexity of the signatures and if there are multiple ones, to make a backup copy of the problem user's userxxx.db file, in the Post Office/ofuser/ directory, as a precaution, to preserve multiple complex signatures.  This may not be needed though.
