Environment

Client for Open Enterprise Server 2 SP4 IR6

Situation

After rebooting the Windows workstation the Client for OES login window appears, but there is no field for the password, just for the username. This leaves the user without the ability to login to eDirectory.

After switching to another user, the password field appears momentarily, then it disappears. The "Computer Only" login has the same problem.

Resolution

Disable Advanced Authentication. This can be accomplished in one of two ways:

1. Hold down the END key as Windows is starting the welcome screen.  e.g. Hold it down once you can see the spinning Windows startup, and don't stop holding it down until you can see the Microsoft credential provider instead of NCCredProvider. Then, login as an Administrator user, to ensure that Windows UAC behavior will not prompt for a user authentication in order to enter Client Properties. Then, disable Advanced Authentication in the Client Properties > Advanced Login tab.

OR

2. If you have access to the registry of the machine, disable Advanced Authentication use via the registry instead of via Client Properties.  If currently enabled, there will be a "Use Advanced Authentication" DWORD value of 0x1 under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Novell\Login].  Change this value to 0 to disable Advanced Authentication..

Cause

Advanced Authentication was accidentally enabled on Client for OES. Because the intention of Advanced Authentication integration is to disallow the user to login without performing  Advanced Authentication, any "accidental" enabling of Advanced Authentication, or being in an environment where Advanced Authentication will not be possible, effectively disables access to the machine.

Additional Information

See the Installing and Configuring Advanced Authentication Client for information about installation of Advanced Authentication.

See Advanced Authentication Credential Provider for information about logging in with Client for Open Enterprise Server with Advanced Authentication enabled.
