Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser triggers file downloads in Filr Desktop client

Environment

Micro Focus Filr 3.3
Micro Focus Filr Desktop client

Situation

CompatTelRunner.exe is the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser which scans Windows 7/8/8.1 application files residing on the computer to assess their compatibility with Windows 10 if an upgrade is performed.

Filr Desktop client can trigger downloads for large numbers of online files when workstation-based applications, such as the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser request access to them. Downloading the files stored in Net Folders can quickly fill up a local disk. When this happens, end user may experience an unresponsive or very slow system.

When this happens, the ServiceProvider.log file will have lots of entries like these:

2017-02-06 13:42:23,394 [INFO] [Method: CFilterDownloadRequestHandler::ProcessDownload][File: FilterDownloadRequestHandler.cpp] [Line: 260] [Last Error: 0] [Process ID: 360] - [Thread ID: 10204] : [CompatTelRunner.exe is downloading Net Folders\Acme_Files\sample-doc.docx]

2017-02-06 13:42:23,753 [INFO] [Method: CFilterDownloadRequestHandler::ProcessDownload][File: FilterDownloadRequestHandler.cpp] [Line: 260] [Last Error: 0] [Process ID: 360] - [Thread ID: 5024] : [CompatTelRunner.exe is downloading Net Folders\Acme_Files\sample-spreadsheet.xlsx]

Resolution

A fix for this issue is available in the Filr 3.4 Update. With the fix in place, the processes CompatTelRunner.exe associated with the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser will be added to Filr Desktop client's default Blacklist.
