Cannot change password on ZENworks appliance management console for zenadmin or root user

Situation

When trying to change the password for zenadmin or root user at the ZENworks Appliance Management console the following error is thrown:

A system error occurred changing the password for the zenadmin user, see the server logs for stack trace

Resolution

As a workaround the password can be changed manually from the command line.
To do this execute the following steps:
  1. Login as root on the appliance management page at <https://primary_server_url:9443>
  2. Click on Terminal & File Explorer
  3. On the console prompt type either of the following to change the password for the respective user:
    • passwd zenadmin
    • passwd root
  4. Enter the new password at the prompt to set the new password for the respective user
