EXTRA! X-treme version 9.1 or higher

This technical note describes how to configure or disable the Most Recently Used (MRU) host session list in EXTRA! X-treme.

In EXTRA! X-treme, the File menu displays the most-recently used host sessions (saved *.edp files). Beginning in version 9.1, when the application is started, an opening dialog also displays the most-recently used sessions as hyperlinks.

These most-recently used sessions are also known as the "MRU list." The MRU list is separate for each user (stored in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Attachmate\EXTRA!\EXTRA.EXE - Recent File List).

By default, the MRU list is enabled for a maximum of 5 entries.

Beginning in version 9.1, the number of MRU list entries can be increased or decreased, or the MRU list can be disabled completely. (Also, the hyperlink open dialog can be independently disabled, if you wish to display the MRU list in the File menu only and revert to the Open dialog behavior from version 9.0 and earlier.)

Configuring or Disabling the MRU Session List

There are several alternative methods for configuring or disabling the MRU session list in EXTRA! X-treme version 9.1:

Note: Proceed with extreme caution when editing the Windows Registry. For full details and warnings regarding editing the Windows Registry, see Microsoft Article 256986 at;en-us;256986.

Option 1: User Registry Value

If version 9.1 is already deployed and running, you can configure or disable the MRU list by modifying the following registry value in RegEdit:

Subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Attachmate\EXTRA!\WorkStationUser\Preferences
Value Name: MRUListLength
Value Data: 0 to 10 (0 to disable; default 5; maximum 10)

(For more information on disabling the hyperlink Open dialog, see KB 7021793.)

Option 2: EXTRA! Security Options

To disable the EXTRA! MRU session list using Security Options, follow these steps:

  1. Open a host session in EXTRA! X-treme.
  2. Click Options menu > Security > Options tab.
  3. In the Category File, uncheck Session MRU item.
  4. When you click OK, changes are saved to the Default.esf security file and take effect the next time EXTRA! is started.

Option 3: Deployment Registry Value

To configure the number of MRU entries for all users, a value can be set in the machine area of the system registry:

Subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Attachmate\EXTRA!\WorkStationUser\Preferences
Value Name: MRUListLength
Value Data: 0 to 10 (0 to disable; default 5; maximum 10)

The value will be copied to the user area of the registry the first time a user runs the version 9.1 application (or after the user’s EXTRA! subkey has been removed).

Deploying the Registry Value

The version 9.1 Custom Installation Wizard does not support creating an installer transform file (*.mst) for the MRUListLength registry value. Use the following steps to create a transform file using the Microsoft Orca MSI Editor instead:

  1. Download and install the Orca database editor. Orca.msi is available from third-party sources, and is included in the Microsoft Platform SDK available at

For more information about Orca, see

  1. Run the Orca editor from the Start menu shortcut.
  2. In the Orca editor, open the EXTRA! X-treme version 9.1 MSI database file (ATMEE91.msi). Note: After downloading the EXTRA! product and extracting files to C:\~Attachmate\EXTRA!-v9.1.0, locate the appropriate file in the following subfolders:
    • MSI\Atmee91.msi: This file is approximately 45 MB in size, which includes the compressed program files. It can be copied and run from other folders.
    • EXTRA!\Atmee91.msi: This file is approximately 3 MB in size. It must be run from the folder containing uncompressed setup.exe and program files to install.
  1. In the Transform menu, click New Transform.
  2. In the Tables (in the left pane), select Registry.
  3. In the Edit menu, click Find and enter MRUListLength.
  4. Edit the entry in the Value column as desired. The default is 5. The value can be from 0 to 10 (where 0 disables the feature).
  5. In the Transform menu, click Generate Transform and enter a name.
  6. Apply the transform to Atmee91.msi by running the following command:
msiexec /i ATMEE91.msi TRANSFORMS=<transform_name>.MST

where <transform_name> is from step 8 above.

After installing the transformed Atmee91.msi package, verify the MRUListLength value has been successfully installed in the registry.
