Situation

Reflection Customization Manager can be used to create new settings or client files to deploy to a variety of locations on an end user's machine. This technical note lists the typical installation locations for files deployed using the Reflection Customization Manager.

Resolution

Creating a Companion Package

To create a companion package (*.msi) that installs files on an end-user system, start the Reflection Customization Manager, click Open Installation, and select "Create a companion package". After you've specified a name for your installer, you'll have the option to choose between "Installs to all users of a machine" and "Installs only for the user who installs it."

The file installation locations available to you depend on whether you are creating a package for all users, or just for the user who installs the package.

Locations Available for All User Installations

To install files for all users of a computer, set the companion package Installation type to "Installs to all users of a machine." To add a file to your installation, click Add Files, then click Add. To specify an install location for the file you are adding, select a location from the drop-down list under "Install file to" and (optionally) specify a subfolder in that location.

For example, you might want to install files to the Reflection shared application data folder. Files installed to this location include exported FTP settings (rftp.xml), exported Kerberos settings (rsckrb5.xml), global Secure Shell configuration files (ssh_config and ssh_known_hosts). To install to this location, from the "Install file to" drop-down list, select "Shared Application Data", then enter Attachmate\Reflection in the text box.

The locations available for all users include the following:

Location name in Customization Manager
Default Windows location
Common Files Folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files
Program Files Folder
C:\Program Files
Reflection Template Folder
Windows 7 and 8:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\Attachmate\Reflection

Reflection X Template Folder
Windows 7 and 8:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\Attachmate\Reflection\X

Shared Application Data
Windows 7 and 8:
C:\ProgramData
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
Windows Folder

Locations Available for Individual User Installations

To install files for individual users, set the companion package Installation type to "Installs for the user who installs it." To add a file to your installation, click Add Files, then click Add. To specify an install location for the file you are adding, select a location from the drop-down list under "Install file to" and (optionally) specify a subfolder in that location.

For example, you might want to install files to the Reflection user folder. Files typically installed to this location include settings files (*.rsf, *.r1w, *.r24, *.r4w), partial settings files, and X client files (*.rxc). To install to this location, from the "Install file to" drop-down list, select "My Documents Folder," then enter Attachmate\Reflection in the text box. Note: The "My Documents Folder" option and other user-specific options are not available if you created a companion file configured to install to all users of a machine (the default).

The locations available for individual user installations include the following:
