Encrypting local files with Filr

Environment

Filr 3.1 Client
Filr 3.1.1 Server

Situation

Unexpected errors are encountered when local Filr data is encrypted.
  • Some environments require that user data be encrypted at all times.
  • The Filr Desktop App does no encryption of the data that is stored/cached locally on the workstation.
  • The folder/directory for local Filr files has been changed to a folder where Windows encryption has been enabled.
  • The Filr settings for the location of local files is changed for each user account to reflect the encrypted folder.

Resolution

Relocating and encrypting Filr data at rest should work fine as long as the "logged-in user" and the "SYSTEM" user both have "full access" to the encrypted folder where the user's Filr data is located.

Cause

Filr requires system level access to its folders, since it reads the folders before a user even logs in to Windows.

Additional Information

Note: Windows 7 needs to have all critical patches to date applied for the Filr client to work correctly.
