Resolution

MySQL provides some sample .cnf files based on the "size" of the server found in /usr/share/mysql:

my-small.cnf

my-medium.cnf

my-large.cnf

my-huge.cnf

Copy my-large.cnf to /etc/my.cnf and edit it.  Configuration changes will take place after restarting mysql (rcmysql restart).
