Environment

Retain 3.x
PAM Tool
GroupWise

Situation

Customer is using the PAM tool to migrate users' personal archives in GroupWise over to Retain.  When using the Migration Configuration Utility, he would get the error,  Error: Access violation at address 005ED2F2 in module 'MigrationToolConfigurationUtility.exe'. Read of address 00000018.

You can also see this error when running the Migration Tool itself:  Access violation at address0057048A in module 'MigrationTool.exe' Read of address 0000000.

Resolution

This is a generic error when no error condition has been programmed into the tool for the condition that occurred.  We've seen this under the following scenarios (although there could certainly be more):

  • There is another copy of the tool running in the background.
  • The archive directory does not exist at the path.
  • The tool is being run on Windows 7 without running it as an administrator.

It is also important that you use the latest version of the PAM tool in order to get the latest fixes.  The PAM tool is included with the Retain installation files (tools | groupwise | Migration Tools | GroupWise Archive Migration); however, the one that ships with your current version of Retain may not actually be the latest version.  Here is the download link to get the most up-to-date version:
