Resolution

Usually the indexer is unable to index an item because it is password protected, in a format that doesn't have text to index, or corrupt in some way and that should result in a few failed items, but if there are many failed items something may have gone wrong more generally.  Trying to reindex the failed items in this instance could be a good idea.

To reindex the failed items: You have to go into the database and reset the f_indexed field in the t_message table.

In MySQL the update command would be:

update retain.t_message set f_indexed = 1 where f_indexed > 2;

It may be slightly different in other SQL dialects.
