Environment

Micro Focus Client for Open Enterprise Server 2 SP4
Client for OES 2 SP4
Microsoft Windows 10 RS2
Microsoft Windows Redstone 2
Microsoft Windows 10 1703 "Creators Update" ("1703" or March 2017 release of Windows 10)

Situation

During Microsoft's beta process for the Windows 10 "Creators Update" (also referred to as "Redstone 2" or "RS2"), one of the very last builds that was provided for testing showed a new issue when upgrading workstations where the Client for Open Enterprise Server is installed.  This issue had not been present in the previous 15058 build or any earlier phases of the beta process.

The latest Windows 10 RS2 upgrade process essentially "uninstalls" and then "re-installs" the Client for Open Enterprise Server product.  As a result, all of the Client for Open Enterprise Server configuration settings become lost, including but not limited to:  The last logged-on user information, the eDirectory-specific login profile information, the SLP configuration information, the LDAP Contextless Login configuration  information, and any other Micro Focus-specific settings in Client Properties.

In some cases, in addition to the Client configuration settings being lost, the registry settings pertaining to the Client's device drives (e.g. NCFSD.SYS, NICM.SYS) are also lost.  This renders the Client unusable, and a manual re-install becomes necessary.

Micro Focus immediately reached out to Microsoft within a week of the build's availability, and we continue to work together on the issue.  But unfortunately because of where Microsoft was within their beta milestones and how committed Microsoft is to the release time frame, we were unable to achieve resolution for this issue prior to lock-down of the final Windows 10 RS2 build. Therefore, the shipping Windows 10 Creators Update ("1703" or March 2017 release of Windows 10) demonstrates this issue.

At a minimum, customers with Client for Open Enterprise Server installed on their machines when upgrading to the Windows 10 1703 "Creators Update" release can expect to see all of their Client for Open Enterprise Server-specific configuration settings lost, and reset back to clean installation defaults. Or, the Client may need to be reinstalled.

Customers are recommended to not allow the Windows 10 1703 Creators Update to apply to their machines, until Microsoft and/or Micro Focus can devise a better solution for this late-introduced issue.

Resolution

This issue has been resolved by Microsoft beginning with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ("1709" / Redstone 3).  To avoid the issue, bypass upgrading to RS2, and upgrade to RS3 instead from whatever pre-RS2 platform you're currently running on.

The issue is not resolved with the released Windows 10 Creators Update ("1703" / Redstone 2). Customers who upgrade to RS2 can expect to see the symptoms described above.
