Environment

NetIQ PlateSpin Migrate 12.x

NetIQ PlateSpin Protect 11.x

Situation

While running a job with a Linux workload Platespin fails in the same spot during the transfer stage with:

Error Code

Unexpected

Message

Input stream ended unexpectedly for file: /dev/vg_rhel/lv_root. See diagnostics for details.

In the kernel log on the source machine we see errors related to reading the storage device:

kernel: [307085.640993] sd 4:0:1:0: [sdd]  Sense Key : Medium Error [current] [descriptor]

kernel: [307085.641020] sd 4:0:1:0: [sdd]  Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error - auto reallocate failed

Resolution

Replace the failing hard drive and restore from backup and attempt the job again.

If this is happening on a Raid array replace the failing hard drive and rebuild the array.
If this is a virtual machine recreate the disk device causing the issue.

Cause

This is caused when the system is unable to read from a block device that is failing or corrupt.

Additional Information

The kernel log for the running system can be read by running dmesg as the root user.
