Why does some text display with square boxes in JCTerm - PAM MyAccess SSH-Relay?

Selecting an SSH-Relay session from MyAccess User Console launches a java-based JCTerm ssh session.
Asian or Middle East characters display as a square or rectangular box, or as a box with a dot or question mark inside while displaying correctly in PuTTY and possibly other ssh clients.
