Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 (OES 11) Linux

Situation

Can't connect with the server using Kanaka via AFP or CIFS.

Kanaka will never work if CIFS and/or AFP are failing.

How to verify whether or not you can authenticate from a MAC via CIFS or AFP to an OES server without using the Kanaka client.

Resolution

This comes directly from the Novell Kanaka for Mac 2.8.2 Installation and Administration Guide.

  1. From a Mac, log in with a local account.
  2. Press Command+K.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • For Macs connected via AFP, type afp://IP_ADDRESS, press Return, then click Connect.
    • For Macs connected via CIFS, type cifs://IP_ADDRESS, press Return, then click Connect.

  1. Log in as a user that has storage on the server.

This should be a user that you intend to be a Kanaka for Mac user.

After authentication, you should see volumes that are accessible via AFP or CIFS.
