XEN Virtual Machine fails to boot with error: "attempt to seek outside of the file"

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Kernel-xen-3.12.53-60.30.1

Situation

Virtual machines upgraded to kernel version 3.12.53-60.30 fails to boot with the following error:

"error: attempt to seek outside of the file."

Resolution

Current workaround is to from the grub menu enter the command line by pressing "c", then take the following steps:

insmod gzio
insmod btrfs
set root='hd0,msdos1'
linux /boot/vmlinux-3.12.53-60.30-xen.gz
initrd /boot/initrd-xen
boot

Cause

Reported to engineering.

Additional Information

NOTE: This also affects Virtual Machines hosted SLES 11 hosts.
