Environment

Novell Filr 1.2 Desktop Client

Situation

Filr Desktop client fails to start on Mac OSX 10.11 (El Capitan).

Resolution

An updated Desktop client with a fix for this issue is available in the Filr 1.2 Hot Patch 3, available via the Novell Patch Finder.

Cause

Some of the Mac OSX frameworks (such as the Finder Plugin) that Filr is tightly integrated with have undergone significant changes in El Capitan. Due to these changes, the Filr Desktop client for Mac is unable to initialize the Mac Finder Plugin which causes the startup problem.

Additional Information

Known limitations with the updated Desktop client:
  1. On Mac OSX 10.11, after upgrading the Mac client from Build 696, the Desktop client may fail to automatically launch / Mac Finder may also fail to respond.
  2. On Mac OSX 10.11, the overlay icons for the Filr files and folders may not be visible.
To workaround these issues, try one of the following:
  • Relaunch Finder: Open System Preferences, deselect the Novell Filr > Finder option and select it again.
  • Reboot the Mac computer.
