Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 (OES 11) Linux Support Pack 2

Situation

If you enter a host name with a "!" character, or any other character not allowed by DHCP, the host can be created.
When you start DHCP it will "Fail" and in the /var/log/rc.dhcpd.log file it says:

Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server 4.2.4-P2
Copyright 2004-2012 Internet Systems Consortium.
All rights reserved.
...

LDAP line 29: expecting left brace.
host 10_!
         ^
LDAP: cannot parse dhcpService entry 'cn=MYService,o=novell'
Configuration file errors encountered -- exiting

The DHCP server fails to load.

Resolution

1) Don't use invalid character in host names
2) A defect has been reported to have the management console not allow the entry of invalid characters.

Cause

The management console allows characters in the host name that the DHCP code does not allow.
