Environment

NetIQ Directory Resource Administrator 9.x
NetIQ Directory Resource Administrator 10.0.x

Situation

When a new full version of DRA is released, the ability to upgrade to the new version exists. Performing an in place upgrade preserves the: existing DRA security Model, managed domains, and other DRA specific configuration. The upgrade will be possible from at least one previous version to the new version. For more specific details on environment requirements for both the old version and the new version please see the NetIQ Directory Resource Administrator Installation guide from Support web site: https://www.netiq.com/documentation/ .

Resolution

Before attempting the upgrade complete the following tasks:
  1. Verify the installation requirements from the  NetIQ Directory Resource Administrator Installation guide from Support web site ( https://www.netiq.com/documentation/ )
    • Verify the supported upgrade path listed on the new version lists your currently installed version of DRA
    • Verify the current software and hardware configuration used on the current version of DRA are also supported by the new version of DRA.
  2. Obtain access to logon interactively as the AD account used to run all NetIQ Services to all Windows Servers hosting NetIQ DRA Server
  3. Ensure there is a full OS backup or Virtual Machine snapshot of all Windows OS hosting the NetIQ Administration Service
    • If a restore is needed, it is recommended to restore all DRA Server Windows OS to the same point in time at once. This step will prevent potential issues with the local ADLDS instance hosted on each DRA Server.
    • Optionally ensure that all secondary DRA Servers are fully functional and appear to have the same DRA Configuration and Security model that is on the Primary DRA server.
  4. If using any custom web pages (created on DRA 9.0.3 or later) not provided with the default install of DRA, ensure there is a full backup of the custom pages.
    • Custom web pages are stored within the following folder: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\DRAClient\components\lib\ui-templates
Once the environment and DRA version are both configured to be supported by the new DRA version, begin the upgrade process using the steps below:
  1. Logon interactively to the Windows OS hosting Primary DRA Server, as the AD account running the NetIQ Administration Service
  2. Extract the DRA setup files by running the NetIQAdminInstallationKit
  3. Before starting the DRA upgrade, install and run the Standalone DRA Health Check Utility (<path to extracted setup files>\Evaluation Utilities\HealthChecker.msi)
  4. Run the Setup.exe from the NetIQ Administration Kit install media
  5. Once the setup completes, run the DRA Health Check utility to ensure success
    • At the end of the upgrade / install there will be a prompt to run the Health Check Utility
    • The DRA Health Check Utility will be upgraded to the one included within the newly installed / upgraded version of DRA
    • For assistance in resolving issues with the DRA Health Check see the Help section with the utility or contact NetIQ Technical Support – www.netitq.com/support
  6. Once the Primary DRA Server is at the new version plus any Service Pack or Patch releases since the new version, the secondary DRA servers can be upgraded.
  7. Options for upgrading secondary servers include
    • Use a clean OS install on a supported Windows OS with a new host name
      • Install a new copy of the new version of DRA as a secondary Server
      • Install any DRA Service packs or Patches on the new secondary Server
      • Join the secondary to the existing DRA MMS
      • Copy the Log Archive Data from one old server to the newly installed secondary Server
      • Copy the Web Customization from an upgraded server to the new secondary Server
    • Reuse an existing DRA server install and existing host name, with a clean install of a new DRA Version
      • Remove the existing DRA server from the DRA MMS
      • Run a manual MMS sync, to ensure all other existing servers are updated
      • Backup the existing Log Archive Data Folder
      • Remove all DRA Software from the existing Windows OS
      • Reboot the Windows OS
      • Clean up any residual DRA program Files or Registry Settings
      • Install a new secondary Server, using the same version of DRA which is installed on the Primary DRA Server
      • Add the secondary Server to the existing DRA MMS
      • Run an MMS sync to ensure all existing DRA servers are updated
      • Copy an Web Customization to the newly installed DRA server
    • Upgrade secondary in place
      • Run the DRA Health Check utility on the Primary DRA server, to ensure stability; before upgrading each secondary server
      • Ensure the current DRA Version, Windows Software and Hardware of the existing secondary are supported by the new version of DRA
      • Run the new version of DRA setup on the existing secondary
      • Post Setup, run the DRA Health Check Utility
  8. Upgrade the DRA Reporting components
    • See the DRA install guide for details on installing and configuring DRA Reporting Services
    • Each DRA Version and Service pack will have an update for DRA Reporting Services
  9. Upgrade DRA Workflow Automation components
    • See the DRA Workflow Automation Administrator Guide documentation for install details
    • DRA Workflow Automation contains the technology used within the legacy NetIQ Aegis product
    • DRA Workflow Automation is a component of the DRA product and is updated along with the DRA product.

Additional Information

If upgrading to a DRA 9..x version, ensure the DRA Restinstaller is also run on every OS hosting the DRA REST Sever, DRA Web Console, DRA Host Service and DRA Powershell CMDs

If upgrading to DRA 9.x , and using the legacy Account and Resource Management console, any standalone installs of the console must also be upgraded.

There is no upgrade for the 9.x ARM console to the DRA 10 version; as the console has been depreciated. The Delegation and Configuration console is still a console and should be upgraded to the DRA 10 version.

The DRA 10.0.x installer includes the DRA REST component within a single installer. If upgrading from DRA 9.x to DRA, this installer will need to be run on any Windows OS hosting the DRA Powershell CMDs other DRA componets
