Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 (OES 11) Linux Support Pack 2
Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 (OES 11) Linux Support Pack 1

Situation

  • Printing suddenly stops or becomes extremely slow
    • up to 5 minutes per print job
  • Cannot manager iPrint objects thru iManager
  • Authenticating thru ssh is very slow.  Other commands within the ssh session are very slow.
  • The "top" command hangs or no output is returned.
  • No errors are seen on the /psmstatus page
  • iPrint printers installed to workstation show status of "printer is not available".
  • Server restart attempt results in hang on tomcat6 shutdown. The server must be powered off.
  • After restart, server performs is acceptable for the next few days.  The above symptoms eventually return.

Resolution

Renew the server certificates by going to iManager -> NetIQ Certificate Server -> Repair Default Certificates.

Cause

Expired certificates cause the nam daemon to be unable to contact the server specified in the /etc/nam.conf file.  Resources continue to be consumed over a few days until the server is unusable in various ways.

Additional Information

When this problem exists, the iPrint Info output file shows the following situations: (IP address and eDir context names added as an example)

# (From nam.conf) /opt/novell/eDirectory/bin/ldapsearch -h 10.1.1.1 -p 636 -D CN=novell,O=USA -W -e /etc/opt/novell/certs/SSCert.der "cn= SSL CertificateDNS - novell"
ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server

and:

# /usr/bin/namgrouplist -x o=USA
Can't contact LDAP server

Certificate shows:

# SSL CertificateDNS - novell
dn: cn=SSL CertificateDNS - novell,o=USA
nDSPKINotAfter: 20141203082236
nDSPKINotBefore: 20121203082236
(in this last Certificate output example, the NotAfter and NotBefore date ranges show the cert is expired.)

After renewing the certificates, namgrouplist command shows the correct info and the symptoms are eliminated.
