Environment
Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows (IR8)
Situation
A folder will be inaccessible to the user, and an error is displayed:
<\\server\volume\path...> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Invalid descriptor.
The problem occurs only when accessing the subdirectory in Windows Explorer via a name (e.g. \\myserver\vol1\home\bob). If accessing the subdirectory via an IP address (e.g. \\192.168.1.1\vol1\home\bob), there is no problem. Other subdirectories in the same directory may still be accessible; only some random folder cannot be accessed. Everything may be working fine for hours or even days before the problem unexpectedly occurs. Rebooting the machine always corrects the problem.
Resolution
Workaround:
Set the following settings in the Novell Client Properties pages:
Bad Address Cache Timeout = 30
Cache Page Size = 16
Cache Pages = 20
File Caching = Off
NCP Establish Connection Timeout = 120
Signature Level = 0
UNC Path Filter = Off
