Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 (OES 11) Linux Support Pack 1

Situation

After installing the May 2014 OES 11 SP1 maintenance updates (released end of May), FTP logins which were working previously may fail with:

530 Login authentication failed

This problem may occur (but is not guaranteed to occur) when both the following are true:

The FTP server in use is "Novell FTP," also known by the package name "novell-oes-pure-ftpd".  This is a special build of pure-ftpd which has been enhanced with extra features for OES.

The FTP server has been configured (typically in /etc/pure-ftpd/pure-ftpd.conf) with "remote_server yes".

Resolution

The steps to resolve the problem depend on the state of the OES server and how it was updated:

1.  If the OES Server was updated with zypper, yast, or suse manager, and has not been rebooted since the maintenance updates were applied, simply reboot the machine.  (This statement should not be taken as an endorsement of any particular update method.  Some methods may not be recommended.  See OES documentation for update instructions.)

2.  If the OES Server was updated with ZENworks, and has not been rebooted since the maintenance updates were applied, execute:
/sbin/chkconfig --add novfsd
Then reboot.

3.  If the OES Server was updated with ZENworks and has already been rebooted, execute:
/sbin/chkconfig --add novfsd
rcnovfsd start
Further reboot should not be needed.

Cause

The package "novell-novfsd", which is required for the remote server feature of Novell FTP, is updated in the May 2014 maintenance patches.  After the update process, it is possible that the novfsd service may be temporarily or permanently disabled.  Corrective action may be needed to enable it.  See the "Resolution" section of this document.

Additional Information

Verification of current novfsd status can be found with the command: rcnovfsd status
It should report "running".

Verification of whether novfsd will be launched at boot can be found with the command: chkconfig novfsd
It should report "novfsd on".
