Situation

System update completes with errors
Many MSI installations fail with Microsoft error 110

The following or similar errors are seen in the system-update.log:

ERROR;MSI_INSTALL_ERROR;novell-zenworks-vc90-redist-all-11.2.4.30833.msi,110;
ERROR;MSI_INSTALL_ERROR;novell-zenworks-vc90-redist-11.2.4.30833.x86_64.msi,110;
ERROR;MSI_INSTALL_ERROR;novell-tftp-11.2.4.45040.msi,110;
ERROR;MSI_INSTALL_ERROR;novell-zenworks-actions-11.2.4.31085.msi,110;

The following error was also seen. However, the MSI specific file showed the 110 error and not 1605.

ERROR;MSI_INSTALL_ERROR;novell-zenworks-zmgbootcd-11.2.4.46077.msi,1605;

The following or similar is seen in the MSI specific log files:

MSI (s) (98:2C) [11:30:26:402]: Note: 1: 1310 2: 32 3: C:\Windows\Installer\68ec6b11.msi 
MSI (s) (98:2C) [11:30:26:402]: MainEngineThread is returning 110
MSI (s) (98:08) [11:30:26:402]: No System Restore sequence number for this installation.
The system cannot open the device or file specified.

Resolution

  1. Disable the Anti-Virus
  2. Re-run the upgrade
NOTE: If the server won't refresh properly to see the upgrade assignment, contact Novell Technical Support

Cause

The Microsoft 110 error means:

ERROR_OPEN_FAILED
The system cannot open the device or file specified.

It appears the Anti-Virus was removing the dynamically created MSI files before they could be installed.
